Unitarian Universalists of Petaluma

The purpose of this congregation is to provide a haven where members can share in a spiritually, culturally, and socially diverse local religious community. We envision a congregation that will be welcoming to all, that values the contributions of each member in shared ministry, and that actively promotes and models individual development of an ethical way of living. We are intentionally intergenerational, and covenant to provide religious education and spiritual growth for children and adults.

UUP Members in the Community! Earl Cruser

Among Earl's many talents, which include preaching at UUP on occasion, as well as leading our adult book discussion groups, is his role as a member of the Dixieland Jazz Band, The Turning Basin Crew.

They'll be playing outside the Petaluma History Museum (the old Carnegie Library) on Saturday, August 11, from 1-3 pm, as part of the quilt show. Take a listen--they're great!

SUNDAY SERVICES

(Social time with refreshments begins at 10:00 am , at the Petaluma Woman's Club, 518 B Street. Worship service begins at 10:30 am. )

Sunday, July 22: "Staying In Touch With The Real Thing" (First of a two-part series)
Guest Speaker: Meredith Guest
As our lives become increasingly complex, our physical connection to reality diminishes. Our food comes mostly from stores. We are protected from the vagaries of nature. We travel in complex, metal machines. How do we get connected or reconnected to reality so we remember what's important and who we are. Come prepared to listen and participate.

Sunday, July 29: "Staying In Touch With The Real Thing" (Second of a two-part series)
Guest Speaker: Meredith Guest
As members of a spiritual community, many, if not most of us believe in some sort of spiritual reality. How do we experience this, celebrate it, encounter and embrace it? Come prepared to listen and share.

Sunday, August 5: "Jewels in the Baggage"
Guest Speakers: KC Greaney and Earl Cruser
KC and Earl will talk about their religious upbringing, how it has shaped their attitudes about religion and spirituality, and how Unitarian Universalism has informed their attitude towards other faith traditions and the people in those traditions.

Book Discussion Group after service on Sunday--new members welcome any time!

Led by Earl Cruser and other volunteers, the book selected for this discussion group is "The Left Hand of God: Healing America's Political and Spiritual Crisis" by Rabbi Michael Lerner. It could be the most important book of the decade in that it sets forth a credible, if ambitious, plan for providing a spiritual alternative to the unholy alliance of fundamentalist religion and neo-conservative, unfettered capitalism that has held sway in our country increasingly since the presidency of Ronald Reagan. Lerner proposes no less that to change America's "bottom line" from money and power to love and caring.

An outgrowth of his Tikkun community and magazine, the Network of Spiritual Progressives motivates the liberal religious community to put a new face on spirituality and politics. Our study group will consider such topics as: the spiritual crisis of our time, a new Bottom Line for America, the true nature of spirituality and its relationship to social justice, the environment, peace and civil rights. Heavy stuff! But we're going to have an exciting time exploring important issues. The discussion group is underway after Sunday services, but new members are welcome to join at any time.

Curious about UUism? About our congregation? Want to ask some questions? We'll hold these sessions on the third Sunday of each month. Meet in the fireside room immediately following the service.

Unsung Hero of the Month

In order to honor the many people who contribute to the realization of the goals of our religious community, the Board of Trustees of UUP is inaugurating an "Unsung Hero of the Month" recognition.

For July 2007 the Board would like to recognize Karen Elliott, a Board member herself, who has given selflessly (and cheerfully) of her time and skills as UUP Treasurer. Every month for the past two years, Karen has presented the monthly expenses and income statements to the Board, as well as making offering deposits weekly, preparing budgets annually, handling payroll, and paying our bills. Thank you, Karen, for all of your hard work and your consistently upbeat, but realistic perspective on our finances!

**********************************************************
One welcome and one thank you

The Board of Trustees met July 10th and chose Jean Conrad as President for the next two year term. (July 2007 - June 30, 2009).

Many, many thanks to David Hathaway for his leadership and devotion to our UUP community these past two years. We are grateful that he will continue to serve on the board.

"Every Night and Every Morn": Hymn of the Month for July 2007

Words: William Blake (1757-1827)

Music: Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958)

That about says it all. Blake & Vaughan Williams! What a great one-two punch.

From Between the Lines:

[Blake] was a visionary British poet and painter who wrote and illustrated epic poems on religious and mystical themes. His well-known works include The Marriage of Heaven and Hell and Songs of Innocence. This text is arranged from Auguries of Innocence.

[Vaughan Williams's] genius and enthusiasm for folk song brought new life to British hymnody and music. A native of Gloucestershire, Vaughan Williams studied at the Royal College of Music and at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he received a doctorate of music in 1901. Among his teachers were Sir Hubert Parry and Maurice Ravel. His compositions include many choral works and songs, four operas, nine symphonies, and numerous hymns.

Here is the full text of Auguries of Innocence:

To see a World in a Grain of Sand
And a Heaven in a Wild Flower,
Hold Infinity in the palm of your hand
And Eternity in an hour.

A Robin Red breast in a Cage
Puts all Heaven in a Rage.
A dove house fill'd with doves & Pigeons
Shudders Hell thro' all its regions.
A dog starv'd at his Master's Gate
Predicts the ruin of the State.
A Horse misus'd upon the Road
Calls to Heaven for Human blood.
Each outcry of the hunted Hare
A fibre from the Brain does tear.
A Skylark wounded in the wing,
A Cherubim does cease to sing.
The Game Cock clipp'd and arm'd for fight
Does the Rising Sun affright.
Every Wolf's & Lion's howl
Raises from Hell a Human Soul.
The wild deer, wand'ring here & there,
Keeps the Human Soul from Care.
The Lamb misus'd breeds public strife
And yet forgives the Butcher's Knife.
The Bat that flits at close of Eve
Has left the Brain that won't believe.
The Owl that calls upon the Night
Speaks the Unbeliever's fright.
He who shall hurt the little Wren
Shall never be belov'd by Men.
He who the Ox to wrath has mov'd
Shall never be by Woman lov'd.
The wanton Boy that kills the Fly
Shall feel the Spider's enmity.
He who torments the Chafer's sprite
Weaves a Bower in endless Night.
The Catterpillar on the Leaf
Repeats to thee thy Mother's grief.
Kill not the Moth nor Butterfly,
For the Last Judgement draweth nigh.
He who shall train the Horse to War
Shall never pass the Polar Bar.
The Beggar's Dog & Widow's Cat,
Feed them & thou wilt grow fat.
The Gnat that sings his Summer's song
Poison gets from Slander's tongue.
The poison of the Snake & Newt
Is the sweat of Envy's Foot.
The poison of the Honey Bee
Is the Artist's Jealousy.
The Prince's Robes & Beggars' Rags
Are Toadstools on the Miser's Bags.
A truth that's told with bad intent
Beats all the Lies you can invent.
It is right it should be so;
Man was made for Joy & Woe;
And when this we rightly know
Thro' the World we safely go.
Joy & Woe are woven fine,
A Clothing for the Soul divine;
Under every grief & pine
Runs a joy with silken twine.
The Babe is more than swadling Bands;
Throughout all these Human Lands
Tools were made, & born were hands,
Every Farmer Understands.
Every Tear from Every Eye
Becomes a Babe in Eternity.
This is caught by Females bright
And return'd to its own delight.
The Bleat, the Bark, Bellow & Roar
Are Waves that Beat on Heaven's Shore.
The Babe that weeps the Rod beneath
Writes Revenge in realms of death.
The Beggar's Rags, fluttering in Air,
Does to Rags the Heavens tear.
The Soldier arm'd with Sword & Gun,
Palsied strikes the Summer's Sun.
The poor Man's Farthing is worth more
Than all the Gold on Afric's Shore.
One Mite wrung from the Labrer's hands
Shall buy & sell the Miser's lands:
Or, if protected from on high,
Does that whole Nation sell & buy.
He who mocks the Infant's Faith
Shall be mock'd in Age & Death.
He who shall teach the Child to Doubt
The rotting Grave shall ne'er get out.
He who respects the Infant's faith
Triumph's over Hell & Death.
The Child's Toys & the Old Man's Reasons
Are the Fruits of the Two seasons.
The Questioner, who sits so sly,
Shall never know how to Reply.
He who replies to words of Doubt
Doth put the Light of Knowledge out.
The Strongest Poison ever known
Came from Caesar's Laurel Crown.
Nought can deform the Human Race
Like the Armour's iron brace.
When Gold & Gems adorn the Plow
To peaceful Arts shall Envy Bow.
A Riddle or the Cricket's Cry
Is to Doubt a fit Reply.
The Emmet's Inch & Eagle's Mile
Make Lame Philosophy to smile.
He who Doubts from what he sees
Will ne'er believe, do what you Please.
If the Sun & Moon should doubt
They'd immediately Go out.
To be in a Passion you Good may do,
But no Good if a Passion is in you.
The Whore & Gambler, by the State
Licenc'd, build that Nation's Fate.
The Harlot's cry from Street to Street
Shall weave Old England's winding Sheet.
The Winner's Shout, the Loser's Curse,
Dance before dead England's Hearse.
Every Night & every Morn
Some to Misery are Born.
Every Morn & every Night
Some are Born to sweet Delight.
Some are Born to sweet Delight,
Some are born to Endless Night.
We are led to Believe a Lie
When we see not Thro' the Eye
Which was Born in a Night to Perish in a Night
When the Soul Slept in Beams of Light.
God Appears & God is Light
To those poor Souls who dwell in the Night,
But does a Human Form Display
To those who Dwell in Realms of day.
